Hello all Seahunters,
We took a quick trip to check the conditions and catch a few bugs. The seas
were perfect for the day. Just rough enough to turn away an average diver.
We decided not to run way offshore, but ended up 27 miles from the inlet.
I had a new seahunter with me on my dives. We were diving
nitrox and had bottom times of around 45 minutes each for three dives. The
water was 74F on the bottom all three dives.
The first dive was on a bunch of rocks laying 300 yards off a ledge we usually
dive. I had noticed it last time we were in the area, but no one went down to
check it out. When we made it to the bottom, we were at a rock that was full
of lobster. I pulled three and my buddy pulled four that were all over three
pounds. No eggs, no soft shells. We started looking around after we silted up
the water and found spotted eagle rays circling above. There were plenty of
snapper, but not many grouper. I kept looking for lobster, but spent most of
my time looking at the small reef fish.
Dive two was on one of my favorite ledges, and it didn't let me down. We
landed on another lobster hotel. I grabbed three more which filled my limit,
and my buddy grabbed two more. There were ten more in there, but we were
done. I collected a nice grouper for the table. We looked at the coral and
small tropicals the remainder of the dive.
Dive three was on a big ledge that I enjoy just for tropical fish. It
sometimes holds big fish, but most of the time not. We saw a few snapper and
lobster, and king fish, and turtles, and other tasty looking critters. It
was alive with all kinds of life. What a treasure to find a reef like this
one.
Dear Moose
Sounds like you had a good day. Let me tell you about my trip on Sunday in
the Gulf of Mexico, Paul, his dad and I in the new 25ft Mako. We left
at 4:00 in the morning for the two and half hour car ride. We put the boat
in the water it was just starting to get light, no wind, I knew that it the
ocean might be calm but when we arrived at our destination the water was a
sheet of glass. We fished several spots and anchored on a rock pile in 32ft
of water. In two hours we had our limit of Grouper, total of 15 smallest 8
lb. largest 17.5 lb. the only thing I wished I had bought was my Dive gear!
This is a must next time. This spot was loaded there were may fish hooked and
even in the shallow water I could not turn them from going under the ledge. I
had forgot what it was to clean fish for 3 hr. and looking forward to going
back.

Moose,
I also got out sat and had a great day...my dive buddy caught a 17 lb
gag on a double rig,, many lanes, and 4 kingfish over 30 lbs, he was so
excited...the bugs were plentiful as usual. It was a little rough though....I
shot a cobia and 2 grays on the bottom,,,,,,,was in the %%%% ****** area, my
normal good spot on the north side was all sanded in, found lobster almost
everywhere, there sure are a lot of them this season for some reason, any
ideas why there are so many???
Later,,,

Lots of bugs this year has been the topic of many discussions. I have no clue, but enjoy it while we have it. Thanks for the report. Who eats kingfish??
